The myth that keeps parents comfortable and players exposed
The most common belief in youth hockey today is simple: “if my child is wearing a neck guard, their neck is protected.”
That belief does not come from neglect or lack of care. It comes from how hockey safety equipment has been presented to parents for decades.
Buy the required gear. Meet the standard. Move on.
But over the last several seasons, a series of tragic and high-profile skate-related laceration incidents at the professional, amateur, and youth levels have forced a difficult question into the open.
How are these injuries still happening when players are wearing protection?
The answer is that not all neck guards are created equal.
Many neck guards have the minimum level of cut-resistance to pass for certification, but are not designed to protect above a mite level of play.
What parents picture versus what really happens
Most parents imagine a skate blade making clean, direct contact with the front of the neck.
That is almost never how laceration injuries occur.
In real hockey, players twist, pivot, reach, fall, and collide at unpredictable angles. Skates come from the side, underneath, or from scrambles around the puck.
And this is where things break down.
Neck protection can fail because it moves out of position.
Traditional neck guards often sit loosely around the neck and leave open areas where skin is exposed. They rely on Velcro straps or elastic closures and are worn on the body rather than with it.
During normal play, and often even without contact, they can rotate, slide, shift out of position, create gaps, or fall off entirely.

Even a small shift can turn covered into exposed in a fraction of a second. That’s why lacerations can and do occur while a neck guard is being worn. The neck guard didn’t disappear, but it wasn’t where it needed to be.
In a large survey of more than 26,000 USA Hockey players, 1.8% reported having sustained a neck laceration from a skate blade at some point in their playing career. Even more concerning, over a quarter of those injuries occurred while the player was already wearing a neck guard.
The takeaway is uncomfortable but important: wearing a neck guard does not automatically mean a player is fully protected.
The certification misunderstanding parents aren’t told about
Most parents assume that if a neck guard is certified or compliant with league rules, it must offer strong protection.
In reality, certification ensures a minimum requirement, not maximum safety.
This is true across many sports. Helmets from decades ago were compliant. So were early football pads. No parent today would assume those provided the best protection available. Hockey equipment follows the same pattern.
What ANSI cut resistance really measures and why it matters
Cut-resistant fabrics are graded using the ANSI cut-resistance scale, which runs from A1, the lowest level, to A9, the highest.
Here’s what most parents are never told:
- A2 - A3 represents low cut resistance. This is the most common rating used in mass-market neck guards. It offers limited protection and is designed for light, low-risk contact rather than high-speed blade impact.
- A4 - A5 represents moderate cut resistance. This level is commonly used in light industrial or work gloves. It may help reduce minor cuts, but it is not designed to reliably stop a skate blade traveling at speed.
- A6 - A7 represents high cut resistance and is typically used in heavy-duty industrial applications where sharp tools and repeated contact are expected. In hockey, this is often considered the baseline for meaningful cut resistance.
- A8 - A9 represents the highest level of cut resistance available under the ANSI standard. This level is used in high-risk environments where blade contact can cause serious injury. In hockey, where sharp skates, speed, and unpredictable movement are constant, this is the level of protection that meaningfully reduces risk.

Most hockey neck guards use A2 or A3-rated cut-resistant fabric. They meet the minimum requirement and pass basic testing, but they’re still far from the highest level of resistance available. Despite the facts, they’re widely sold and heavily trusted.
An independent safety evaluation by Mayo Clinic researchers tested a wide range of hockey neck guards under forces designed to mirror real gameplay skate impacts. The study found that most neck guards failed to stop a skate blade at higher force levels, with only a small number consistently resisting the blade. The neck guards that performed best were made from significantly stronger materials, which tend to align with ANSI A6 or higher cut-resistance ratings. The ANSI scale stops at A9. There is nothing above it, and very few hockey products operate at that level.

Why making a neck guard tighter doesn’t solve the problem
Some neck guards attempt to solve the movement issue by being tighter or more rigid.
That actually introduces a different failure: structured guards do not move naturally with the body. They resist rotation instead of adapting to it. Worse, they still create exposure points during play.
So parents are unknowingly forced into a bad tradeoff: loose gear that shifts, or tight gear that restricts movement.
And neither actually solves the problem.
The blind spot parents often miss: wrists
Neck protection gets attention for good reason.
But skate lacerations also happen at the wrists, which are frequently near skates, especially during falls, scrums, and board battles. And in most cases, the wrists are completely unprotected.
Many neck guards do not include wrist protection, leaving another high-risk area exposed.

The truth most parents do not realize until it is too late
Most neck guards provide a false sense of safety.
